Best Small-Town Places to Eat on Scenic Byway 12: A Road-Tripper’s Guide From Panguitch to Boulder

Scenic Byway 12 winding across the narrow Hogsback ridge near Boulder, Utah

Utah’s Scenic Byway 12 runs through some of the most dramatic country in the West: Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante and the narrow Hogsback ridge near Boulder. The towns along it are small, some with only a few hundred people. But the food scene punches way above its weight.

Here are seven places worth stopping, roughly in order as you drive west to east.

A note on seasons: Many Byway 12 restaurants close for winter. Several on this list wrap up their 2026 seasons between late October and late November, then reopen in spring. Always check before you drive.

1. Cowboy’s Smokehouse (Panguitch)

Come for: mesquite-smoked barbecue before you hit the byway.

Panguitch sits at the western gateway to Byway 12, and Cowboy’s Smokehouse has been smoking meats over mesquite there for decades. The Perkins and Magoon families bought it in 2017 and later moved it across Main Street into a historic building.

Order: smoked meats, and save room for cobbler.

Where: 80 N. Main St., Panguitch

2. Stone Hearth Grille (Tropic)

Come for: a special-occasion dinner near Bryce Canyon.

Part of the Stone Canyon Inn, Stone Hearth Grille is a post-and-beam dining room with a stone fireplace and a deck over a stream and waterfall, with sunset views of the cliffs. Sauces are made from scratch, and reservations are recommended.

Order: the New York strip, then chocolate mousse.

Where: 1380 W. Stone Canyon Ln., Tropic
Season: The 2026 season runs through October 29, then reopens in spring. See stonehearthgrille.com

3. Escalante Outfitters (Escalante)

Come for: sourdough pizza after a day in the canyons.

Escalante Outfitters is part gear shop, part cabins, part tour company and part restaurant, and the Waggoner family has run it since 2006, now into a third generation. The kitchen turns out homemade sourdough-crust pizza, Caffe Ibis organic coffee and a big selection of bottled craft beer.

Order: the King’s Mesa or Chop Rock pizza.

Where: 310 W. Main St., Escalante
Season: Open daily 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in season. The last day of the 2026 season is November 17. See escalanteoutfitters.com

4. Kiva Koffeehouse (between Escalante and Boulder)

Come for: coffee with one of the best views on the road.

Kiva Koffeehouse sits on a hill right off Highway 12, built in 1998 by Bradshaw Bowman from natural materials designed to blend into the landscape. Big windows look out over the canyon country. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs halfway along the byway.

Order: a breakfast burrito, a blackberry muffin and a latte.

Where: On Highway 12, east of Escalante
Season: Seasonal, Wednesday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. when open. See kivakoffeehouse.com

5. Hell’s Backbone Grill & Farm (Boulder)

Come for: one of the most celebrated restaurants in the West.

Founded by Blake Spalding and Jen Castle, Hell’s Backbone grows its own food on a six-acre farm, runs on Buddhist principles, and has earned repeated James Beard recognition. It’s worth planning your whole trip around.

6. Sweetwater Kitchen (Boulder)

Come for: ranch-raised steak on a patio with a view.

Sweetwater Kitchen is another farm-to-table option in Boulder. Many of its ingredients are grown or raised on its own ranch, and the patio makes for a beautiful summer evening.

Order: the grass-fed steak, the green chili cheeseburger or the rainbow trout.

Where: Hells Backbone Road, Boulder
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday evenings. See sweetwaterkitchen.com for directions and current hours

Come for: a hearty meal at the park’s front door, open year-round.

Just off Byway 12 at the entrance to Bryce Canyon, the Syrett family’s Ruby’s Inn has fed travelers since 1916. Its Cowboy’s Buffet and Steak Room is open daily, which makes it a reliable stop when the smaller towns have closed for the winter.
